Are a Visa or ESTA the same thing?

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is not a visa, is only that a Travel Authorization.  It doesn’t confer the benefits as a visa.  The ESTA is part of a Visa Waiver Program and was meant to attract international tourist or business relationships from citizens of 36 different countries.  Once a foreign citizen has an approved ESTA is valid for 2 years (if the passport doesn’t expire sooner) and allows to entry and stay in the United States for no longer than 90 days.  It allows multiple visits to the United States within that application. If the individual plans to stay longer than 90 days, should apply for a visa.

The individual is allowed to travel for 90 days twice a year.  The officer at Customs will determine the length of the stays based on how many days have left.  You can never exceed 90 days in each stay; once you hit the limit you need to leave the U.S. and are allowed to re-entry for 90 days once again during that year.  In a short sentence: You will never exceed 180 days per year and you will split those 180 in two visits, each visit cannot exceed 90 days.

If a person is comes as a nonimmigrant visa category such as under Visa Waiver Program, cannot change the status later.
